We are Dr. Tasia and Marisol Cerezo. We are the co-funders of Meryl's Safe Haven!!
To share a little about ourselves: Between the two of us, we have over 20 years experience in the non-profit sector. We have worked in organizations that serve as shelters, youth empowerment programming, workforce development, higher education, etc. For a number of years, we talked about opening a non-profit organization not with just the skills and experience we had, but to fill a need in the community. As a residential manager, Marisol has first-hand experience of the particular needs of families. As a previous teen center director, Tasia has experience with supporting individuals between the ages of 14-25 through various programs, not only in the city we reside but the country. We both have experience providing and supporting shelter programs. After the passing of Tasia's aunt, Meryl, the vision was clear. Meryl's Safe Haven is a dream turned reality with a foundation of resilience and a passion for providing a safe haven for families and youth.
Our goal is to take you on this journey which we don't image will be easy, but as foster/pre-adoptive, parents with full-time positions in addition to this start up, we hope it will be worth it. Upcoming blogs will take you on a journey of a non-profit start-up from all perspectives: what you need to be prepared for and need to do as the founder, the challenges experienced, the learnings, and the emotions as an organization created in memory of. We hope this will be an inspiration to anyone who has also thought about beginning a non-profit and became overwhelmed or anxious at the thought of it.
