Yesterday we received notice that we are officially identified as a tax exempt, 501c3, organization. We also learned that we did not complete the state Charity Registration correctly and had to resubmit; waiting for three weeks to realize our mistake set us back was a bit frustrating. However, when re-submitting, yesterday, we were also able to include our 501c3 notification. Going from "has filed and not heard back" to being able to say we had filed and been approved was rewarding.
Something we didn't know about our state but happy we came across the information through additional research is the importance of the charity registration. Without that identifier and the certificate of solicitation, we cannot solicit funds or allow others to solicit funds on our behalf. While we have accomplished so much, the reality is, we need leverage to move forward.
Since our first blog, a number of things have happened in addition to the previously mentioned:
(1) our honorary namesake had a heavenly birthday,
(2) we have opened a bank account,
(3) we've reached out to the councilwoman of our ward who read "spouse" in our email and multiple times in her email wrote back referencing a "husband" and, to this point, has not responded to my correction in which I also clarified why I was reaching out to her,
(4) have contacted the office of Health and Human Services - two days, no response, and
(5) we have been connected to a foundation.
Our efforts will continue but know it feels like an uphill battle riddled by exhaustion from full-time positions and parenting.
